Claretha Hughes

Claretha Hughes, assistant professor of workforce development education at the University of Arkansas, recently won the Outstanding Assistant Professor Award from the University Council for Workforce and Human Resource Education.

The award is based on demonstrated professional performance, rigor and substance of academic work, and professional potential. It was presented at the council’s meeting in Charlotte, N.C.

The University Council for Workforce and Human Resource Education is a nonprofit organization representing the nation’s leading universities. The council provides leadership for teaching, research and service initiatives in career and technical education and human resource development.

Hughes was nominated by her peers on the workforce development education faculty in the College of Education and Health Professions. Hughes, who joined the college faculty in the fall of 2004, earned her doctorate from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Her primary teaching and research emphasis includes career development transitions, teaching disadvantaged adults and scholar-practitioner development. She uses goals and expectancy theories of motivation throughout her teaching and research.

Hughes’ research agenda concerns value creation through the use of human resource development and technology development. She is interested in the impact of values on teaching and learning processes and motivation; on organizational culture, change strategies and leadership; and on technology in the workplace environment and employee behavior.
