Professional Biography:
Claretha Hughes is assistant professor of workforce development education in the Department of Rehabilitation, Human Resources and Communication Disorders at the University of Arkansas. She has taught FYE courses for the past two years. Her primary teaching and research emphasis include career development transitions, teaching disadvantaged adults and scholar-practitioner development. She uses goals and expectancy theories of motivation throughout her teaching and research.
Most recently, Hughes has published a book chapter titled Career Planning: Towards a More Inclusive Model to develop a model that provides career planning for women and minorities to transition within the workplace. She currently serves on the Graduate Council, University of Arkansas Economic Development Institute (UAEDI), Faculty Grants and Awards Committee and University Course and Program Review Committee.
Hughes is an active member of the Academy of Human Resource Development, Academy of Management, North American Management Society, and a Manufacturing Skill Standards Council associate serving on their textbook and assessment and documentation committees.
Hughes holds a doctorate in Career and Technical Education specializing in Training and Development/Instructional Technology from Virginia Tech, a Master of Textiles in Textile Management and Technology from NC State University and Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Clemson University.
Academic Interests and Accomplishments:
Hughes teaches Foundations of Vocational Education, Foundations of Adult Education, Instructional Materials in Vocational and Adult Education and Facilitating Learning in the Workplace. She was selected as a Finalist for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award, 2003 by the Virginia Minority Supplier Development Council. She is a graduate of Leadership Roanoke Valley 2002-2003. Her professional society honors include selection into Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi and Omicron Tau Theta. She was also honored by International Who's Who of Professional Management.
